| As women we
let our emotions get the better of us. When we are happy or
excited, people around us know it. When we are angry, people
know it. Some are silent and angry others (like me) are loud
when they are angry. Ladies, when we are going through PMS we
are all of these emotions within one hour. When this happens I
don’t know who I feel sorry for, me or the people around me. It
is almost like my husband and children have a look on their
sweet little faces like, “oh no, here it is again, everyone run
and take cover.” Emotions are given to us by God. It’s good to
feel something that‘s what makes us alive. Some women live by
their emotions. If they are feeling “good” then it will be a
“good” day. If they are feeling “bad” then it will be a “bad”
day. I guess that seems ok, but that is a lot of up’s and
down’s. It might be like living a life on a roller coaster. Up
one day and down the next. This is living life allowing our
emotions to rule. When we allow our emotion to rule, we are not
allowing God to rule.
Emotions change just like circumstances change in our
life. If we look at our circumstances we see that they go
from good to better to bad them maybe good again. They are
constantly changing. Our circumstances are never the same.
If we are always looking to our circumstances to get our
emotional cues then our eyes are not on God, but on our
circumstances. I love the song “Turn your eyes upon Jesus”
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full into His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
I say this to myself often when I am overly emotional
or looking to closely at my circumstances. The line “And the
things of earth will grow strangely dim” reminds me of the
circumstances of life, our emotions, or our problems. These are
all the “things of earth.” Our focus should be on Him not our
emotions. It is easy to get caught up in how we feel, but God
wants us to live beyond how we feel. In Philippians 4:8 God
tells us what He wants us to be thinking about: “Finally,
brethren ,whatever things are true, whatever things are noble,
whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever
things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there
is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate
on these things.”
Take this scripture and make it into a series of questions
to ask yourself when emotions seem to rule:
- Are your feelings or circumstances true or are they
just born out of speculation or fear of what might
happen?
- Are they noble or are they downright silly?
- Are they just?
- Are they pure or lovely or of good report?
- Is there any virtue and is it praiseworthy?
If it is yes to all of these things then God’s word says we
can “meditate on these things.”
